At the May 2015 TEDx Vancouver event, photographer Anand Varma presented the video documentation of the first 21 days of a bee’s life, recording bees he raised at his Californian home. This project, commissioned by National Geographic Magazine, takes the viewer right into the hive. From bee egg, to larva, to pupae the documentation showcases the amazing process of development, differentiation, tissue organization, and pigmentation.
Within this work, Varma also recorded and presented research on the mites that infect and feed off the blood of baby bees. These are the mites that are responsible for the collapse of colonies, and the global deterioration of the bees. Watch the full TED Talk video below for more information.
